Happy Disability Pride Month!

July 26‘ Recap
Did You Know July is Disability Pride Month?

Capitol Crawl (March 12, 1990)
Why July?
On July 26, 1990, The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) was signed. For over a decade, July has been known as Disability Pride Month to coincide with that anniversary signing.
I’m not going to get into the long and textured history of how we got to ADA and where we’re at with it today. What I will say is that while ADA does help to provide some level if accessibility in an otherwise ableist society, it could be so much more.
Invisible Disabilities
What I can speak on is my relationship to disabilities. I’ve had invisible cognitive and physical disabilities since childhood, although I wasn’t totally aware of them at a young age. Truthfully, I didn’t know the reason I struggled in school and was often pulled into separate classrooms until I turned 18 and the school district legally mailed me my records.
Since then I developed invisible physical disabilities. If you’re not aware, an “invisible” disability is sort of what it sounds like - a disability but one that isn’t visibly noticeable. This can be a cognitive or mental health disability (such as ADHD) or a physical one (arthritis).
Voyage LA Interview

I shared my disability story in my recent Voyage LA interview, but the journey is a life-long one. Just recently I recieved a new disability diagnosis.
Sometimes it can feel hopeless. You do everything in your power to maintain what a healthy lifestyle is for you, and still, these disabilities keep coming.
Personally, I do think it’s important to take time to grieve and to acknowledge that grief (of any kind) isn’t linear. Sometimes it comes with the initial diagnosis. Sometimes it comes with the realization you’re bandwidth isn’t the same anymore. Sometimes it comes when you can’t complete daily tasks or chores without difficulty.
What I do know is that building up a support system around you is key. Support looks different for everyone and often we don’t know what resources are available. My best unsolicited advice is to seek out group therapy or others with the same/similar disabilities. Having people you can call on while navigating the emotional and practical implications of having a disability is incredibly helpful.
A New Queer Chamber
I’d like to take a quick moment to acknowledge a NEW, local queer chamber!

OCQCC
The Orange County Queer Chamber of Commerce (OCQCC)
The OCQCC is the newest queer chamber in their first year. I attended a mixer at coworking space HanaHaus Newport Beach. There were fun stickers, pride flags, and a low-stakes bingo game that made it easy to kick off networking.
Events On Cue is a proud member of the OCQCC and we’d recommend it to other small, queer businesses or allies!
Got Any Recommendations?

Vendor Spotlight:
Myla Roja is a genre-blending trans Filipina artist, producer, multi-instrumentalist and DJ based in Long Beach, California.

Local Spotlight: Marla’s Studio
Marla’s Studio is a private Pilates and Stretch studio in Long Beach. In 2016, Marla’s Studio opened their doors with the intention of creating a space that was not only accessible to all but a space where every individual felt seen, heard and most importantly, felt a sense of safety and belonging.

Due to her own struggles with chronic migraine, an invisible disability, Marla, owner of Marla’s Studio, created a space where people can show up, as they are, and get individualized care, tailored to each person’s abilities. Whether someone comes into the studio for a private pilates
session or an assisted stretch, every session is met with compassion, intention and desire to help people attain their personal goals.
What started out as a private Pilates and Stretch studio, has evolved into a mind-body connection wellness space. At Marla’s Studio, you can come in for pilates, an assisted stretch, a therapeutic thermal massage or red light therapy, all in a private, safe and inclusive environment where you can be assured that this studio is a safe space created for you.

This month’s theme is inspired by Porsche Experience Center Los Angeles (PECLA) in Los Angeles: Full Speed Ahead Launch Party 🏁
This is the perfect space for a brand activation or launch party.

PECLA offers one of the most unique, interactive event spaces I’ve ever seen. From the moment you walk through the doors, you’re immersed in a showroom with a view into the body shop and race track.
On the first floor you’ll find their gift shop, coffee bar, and meeting rooms. There’s even an outdoor terrace available while you wait for your turn to experience the track.
Upstairs is the elegant Restaurant 917 - which is open to the public via reservation! Across from the restaurant there’s a private board room/meeting room complete with an intimate, private balcony overlooking the track.

Also upstairs is the Simulator Lab, an intimate space where you can virtually drive on race tracks around the world. This space can also be included in your rental and can be used for friendly competition between your guests 🏎️.
The name is no coincidence: this venue really is an experience. There’s a lot of room for customization, swag, and interactive experiences that will leave your guests raving about your event for years to come.
